Kota Kinabalu is set to introduce a modern public bus network under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, rebranded as BAS.MY, marking a new era in urban transport for the city in Malaysia. The Federal Government has allocated MYR17.6 million annually (MYR88 million over five years) to fund the initiative, following the rollout of similar systems in cities including Seremban, Ipoh, and Kuching.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook confirmed that 48 pink-branded buses will operate across eight routes, including suburban areas such as Menggatal. Buses will run daily from 5:30 am to 11 pm, with departures every 30–60 minutes. The fleet features GPS tracking, cashless payments, CCTV, and accessibility facilities for elderly and disabled passengers.
To reduce commuting costs, the government will introduce a 30-Day Unlimited Travel Pass (RM50) and a BAS.MY Concession Card offering free rides to senior citizens, students, and OKU cardholders. The service will be managed by Jaguh Bayu Sdn Bhd, monitored by the Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) to ensure punctuality and reliability. Kota Kinabalu City Hall and state officials have welcomed the service as a long-awaited, safe, and affordable transport option.
