The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is expediting the construction of the Kiakkai Bridge over the Chao Phraya River, aiming for completion by 2026. The project, divided into three phases, includes elevated roads on both riverbanks and the main bridge structure. Foundation work on the Thon Buri side is underway but delayed due to land acquisition issues, while the bridge’s body is 33.2 per cent complete and set for December 2025. Approval for the Phra Nakhon side segment is still pending.
Meanwhile, BMA has scrapped two other bridge projects—Chan–Charoen Nakhon and Lat Ya–Maha Phruttharam—due to feasibility concerns, environmental impact assessments, and public opposition. Space constraints and the presence of historical sites also contributed to the cancellations. The Public Works Department is now studying alternative traffic solutions for the affected areas.
