Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide technical assistance to Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) to modernise Manila’s LRT-1 system. The project aims to enhance energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and cut CO₂ emissions in alignment with the Philippines’ carbon reduction targets under the Paris Agreement.
As part of a June 2024 agreement, JICA partnered with Japan-based firms Sumitomo and Hankyu to support LRT-1’s long-term sustainability. Japanese specialists will assess the line’s traction systems, rolling stock, and energy losses. Planned upgrades include energy-efficient driving methods and energy recovery technologies. Project implementation is scheduled from July 2025 to May 2026.
