The USD114 billion India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, a 1,360-km project aimed at boosting ASEAN economic integration, faces delays due to ongoing instability in Myanmar. Originally set for completion in 2015 and later pushed to 2027, the project remains stalled as conflicts disrupt progress.
Despite 70 per cent completion, Myanmar’s security situation has indefinitely halted work on the highway, which runs from Moreh, India, through Mandalay, Myanmar, to Mae Sot, Thailand. Experts suggest alternative routes, multimodal transport, or diplomatic negotiations to salvage the project. Once operational, it is expected to enhance trade, cut transportation costs, and strengthen India’s economic ties with ASEAN.
