U Mobile has partnered with China-based tech firms Huawei and ZTE to roll out Malaysia’s second 5G network, as the country transitions to a dual network model aimed at enhancing competition in telecom infrastructure.
Announced in line with Malaysia’s May 2023 decision to break the single-operator 5G model, the new network deployment splits responsibilities: Huawei will cover Peninsular Malaysia, while ZTE will manage East Malaysia.
U Mobile cited Huawei and ZTE’s global telecom expertise as key reasons for their selection. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The move marks a major milestone in Malaysia’s efforts to democratise its digital infrastructure and accelerate nationwide 5G adoption.
