The Government of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has unveiled a roadmap to convert its entire bus fleet to electric or compressed natural gas (CNG) by 2030, beginning with new clean-energy-only bus routes from 2025 in Vietnam. The move is part of the city’s broader strategy to curb emissions and develop sustainable public transportation.

As part of the initial rollout, 37 new subsidised bus routes launching August 1, 2025, will deploy 600 vehicles — nearly 300 of which will use electric or CNG, increasing the city’s share of clean-energy buses to around 50 percent. Currently, 700 out of 2,200 buses use clean energy.

Additionally, HCMC plans to electrify 80 per cent of the 400,000 motorbikes used by ride-hailing and delivery drivers by 2027, with a complete ban on gasoline-powered bikes in app-based services proposed from 2029. Infrastructure measures include the construction of 3,000 charging and battery-swapping stations by 2028, and 19 large-capacity bus charging hubs by 2027 at a total cost of VND400 billion.
