The Ministry of Construction has recommended that Ho Chi Minh City take charge of the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh urban railway project, which aims to enhance connectivity between Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports. The 42-km railway, estimated at USD3.5 billion, will feature a dual-track system with a gauge of 1,435 mm and a design speed of 120 km/hr. The project is part of the city’s long-term urban planning, integrating with Metro Lines 2 and 6.
To expedite implementation, the Ministry has suggested including the project in the list of pilot initiatives under special mechanisms approved by the National Assembly. If approved, investment preparations could be completed within a year. The pre-feasibility study is currently under review, with the final proposal expected to be submitted to the National Assembly in October 2025. The railway is expected to enhance economic development, reduce congestion, and support regional connectivity.
