Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has announced plans to build a 940 km metro system with 27 lines, following its merger with Binh Duong and Ba Ria–Vung Tau. Seven lines under Resolution 188, spanning 355 km, are slated for completion by 2035. Metro Line 1 has already served over 10 million passengers, while Line 2 is in pre-construction phase. Key routes, including Thu Thiem–Long Thanh and the Can Gio line, are prioritised.
Officials are pushing transit-oriented development (TOD) alongside metro expansion to attract investment and reduce urban congestion. The project is backed by Resolutions 98 and 188, allowing direct access to funding and bypassing standard investment procedures. Estimated total investment exceeds USD46 billion.
