Hankyu Railway has been selected for a Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) subsidy programme to demonstrate park-and-ride bicycle parking infrastructure in Metro Manila, Philippines. The project aims to reduce road congestion and air pollution by developing smart bicycle parking facilities near railway stations that combine a Japanese mechanical bicycle parking system with local cashless payment systems.
The demonstration will be implemented with Kyoto-based Archiems with support from METI. Hankyu Railway, which invested in Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) in 2024, will use the project to test measures to improve access to stations and encourage greater rail use. The initiative is intended to support more sustainable urban transport by enabling passengers to cycle or use other modes to reach suburban stations before continuing their journeys by rail.
