The Government of Hà Nội has extended its urban bicycle pilot service until the end of 2025, following a decision by the city’s People’s Committee. Initially launched in August 2023, the service currently operates 1,000 bicycles across 79 stations, strategically located near bus stops, parks, and tourist destinations. Despite attracting over 208,000 users and facilitating 340,000 trips, the service has struggled with financial losses, primarily due to low rental fares and limited subsidies.
The pilot’s extension aims to improve integration with other public transport systems, such as buses and urban railways, while expanding the service to additional districts with 3,000 more bicycles. The city’s Department of Transport has been tasked with finalizing station locations, revising legal frameworks, and developing a management plan for both traditional and electric bikes. Revenue from the first year reached VNĐ3.7 billion, but operational costs have exceeded VNĐ5.7 billion, highlighting the need for subsidies or alternative funding strategies.
