The Government of Laos has approved feasibility studies and the construction of 58 solar power plants, with a combined installed capacity of 7,656 MW, across the country. Works on eight of the solar plants have already been completed while the remaining 50 projects are under construction. The projects will include large-scale solar projects in the 0.4-22kW range as well as solar power for self-consumption, rural development and agriculture.

Once these projects are connected to the national grid, it will aid the government’s effort to enhance Cambodia’s energy exports and reduce electricity re-imports from neighbouring nations during the dry season. Solar power capacity in Laos is predicted to range between 10,000 MW and 15,000 MW by 2030, while wind power potential is estimated to be about 100,000 MW.
