Gentari, a subsidiary of Petronas, will install hybrid electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Malaysia that will be powered by solar energy and feature energy storage systems (ESS). The solar system will charge the ESS during the non-peak hours while at night the power grid will be used to generate power.

The hybrid charging station will address the issue of grid intermittency in certain areas. In these areas, the chargers will use power stored in the ESS to provide high-speed charging solutions to electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

The stations will be installed in locations which will allow for good range extensions along highways and interstates, with the first set of chargers set to be deployed before the end of 2023.

Gentari currently has more than 170 public EV chargers nationwide. Additionally, the company is planning to install more than 250 chargers by Q4 2023 to achieve its aim of having at least 400 chargers in the country by the end of 2023.
