Edra Energy Sdn Bhd has announced that the third unit of Edra Melaka Power Plant (EMPP) has commenced commercial operation in Malaysia. The 2,242 MW facility is one of the largest combined cycle gas turbine power plants in Southeast Asia (SEA) and the energy generated will support Malaysia’s energy requirements. The power plant is also expected to increase the inflow of investments into Melaka and increase commercial and industrial development around the site.

Construction work on the EMPP started in December 2017. The first unit of the plant started operations in December 2021 while Unit 2 commenced operations in January 2022. With the recently completed Unit 3, the entire facility has come online and is supplying power to the local grid.

Hyundai Engineering was appointed as the lead engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) provider with General Electric Company (GE) securing the contract to supply the power train, gas and steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators and generators. EMPP features the 9HA.02 gas turbine technology which is expected to produce power with an efficiency rate of 60 per cent.
