The Transport Ministry of Malaysia has launched a feasibility study to evaluate the potential development of the Trans Borneo Railway, a proposed rail network connecting Sabah and Sarawak. The study, initiated in June 2025, is expected to be completed by mid-2026, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Consultants are conducting consultations with federal and state governments, relevant agencies, and industry stakeholders to assess domestic capacity and gather preliminary feedback.
The study will also involve engagement with Brunei and Indonesia to ensure alignment with cross-border development plans. It will cover technical requirements, socio-economic benefits, cost considerations, and Malaysia’s long-term financial capacity to support the project.
The Trans Borneo Railway aims to link Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Kalimantan, Indonesia, over a proposed route exceeding 1,600 km with potential train speeds of up to 350 km/hr.
