The Department of Transportation (DOTr) in the Philippines has initiated a feasibility study for a 65 km subway project aimed at addressing traffic congestion in Metro Cebu. The proposed underground railway is considered the best solution due to Cebu’s narrow roads, making an elevated system unfeasible. The project, part of the Metro Cebu Urban Transport Master Plan, will be constructed in two phases. The first phase, the central line, will connect cities including Danao, Cebu, and Talisay, while the second phase, the coastal line, will cover areas like Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu.
The Cebu subway is designed to improve mass transit in the region, which has seen increasing demand for efficient transport solutions. This project follows the ongoing Metro Manila Subway, which is 18.24 per cent complete and aims to serve over 519,000 passengers daily. The DOTr is also working with Japan’s JICA on a 30-year rail master plan to enhance regional rail infrastructure.
