ExxonMobil and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on prospective carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in Malaysia. Under the MoU, the companies will evaluate the feasibility of deploying CCS projects in select locations offshore Peninsular Malaysia. They will also gather and share subsurface technical and infrastructure data on wells, facilities, and pipelines. The MoU’s main goal is to assist the Government of Malaysia in reducing carbon emissions and achieving its net-zero goals.

The companies will combine their resources to create initiatives that advance efficient, safe, and ready-to-use technology at a scale that will substantially reduce emissions across Malaysia.

ExxonMobil has announced nine carbon capture and storage opportunities since launching its Low Carbon Solutions company in March 2021 to commercialise low-emission technology, including the MoU with Petronas.
