The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) plans to undertake expansion works at Côn Đảo Airport, a domestic airport in the country’s south coast. Works are expected to take nine-months to complete. The Ministry of Transport (MOT) plans to provide alternative transport while the airport undergoes work.
In recent years, operations on the airport have been limited due to its size. The expansion will allow the airport to accommodate up to 2 million passengers per year, increasing its capacity by nearly 5 times. The existing runway will also be widened and expanded, increasing the available parking stacks for aircrafts from two to eight.
The expansion will allow the airport to handle larger narrowbody twinjets such as the Airbus A320 and A321. The planned expansion will also increase the airport’s nighttime operation by upgrading the lighting on the facility.
The project will be funded by CAAV and the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV). These upgrades to Côn Đảo Airport are part of a larger public investment initiative for the region between 2021 to 2025.
