Vietnam Electricity (EVN), has secured government approval to develop the Quang Trach II LNG power plant in Quang Binh province. The facility will use mixed-cycle gas turbines with a total capacity of 1.5 GW, divided into two units of 750 MW each. The project will be developed at an estimated investment of VND52.490 billion.
The plant was initially planned as a 1.2 GW coal-fired plant, the Quang Trach II plant was converted to LNG in line with the National Energy Development Strategy of Vietnam for 2030. At the end of 2023, gas-fired power plants made up 9 per cent of Vietnam’s installed capacity, while coal-fired plants accounted for 29 per cent. The country aims to build 15 LNG plants by 2035, totalling over 22 GW and comprising nearly 15 per cent of its energy mix.
