The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has issued a request for information (RFI) to investigate the potential of developing geothermal energy and carbon storage capacity in Singapore. The RFI is expected to include approaches, methodologies and implementation details and will aid in the preparation on a request for proposal (RFP) to analyse the feasibility of deploying geothermal systems in the country.

The proposed geophysical exploration project will complement exploratory investigations in the north and east region of Singapore, allowing for a more thorough evaluation of geothermal potential as well as appropriate deployment areas. Once completed, the agency will develop and launch the RFP. Interested companies are required to submit their RFI responses by May 20, 2022.

The EPA is also considering broadening the scope of the project to include carbon storage and prospective sites for subterranean power plant equipment such as substations and turbine buildings. By 2023-24, EMA expects to have established preliminary findings from the study.
