The Department of Transport (DoTr) of the Philippines has announced plans to introduce a government bike share system as well as end-of-trip bicycle facilities on the EDSA thoroughfare and Cebu City’s South Road Properties. The agency also intends to build bike-sharing stations at public transportation terminals, government, city and municipal facilities, commercial businesses, and medical facilities. In some regions, DoTr will also install end-of-trip facilities including bike racks, bike repair facilities, and bike sheds as well as bike counting technology including CCTV and other automatic counters.
The agency has allocated PHP2 billion for the development of active transportation under the General Appropriation Act (GAA) 2022. A part of these funds will be spent on upgrading Class 2 bike lanes to Class 1 lanes with physical separators. Other provisions under the act include development and repair of pedestrian walkways and the allocation of at least 50 per cent of the road space for public transportation, bicycles, and pedestrians.
During 2021, the DoTr developed a total of 497 km of new bike lane networks in three cities in the Philippines. This includes 129.66 km of new bike lanes in Metro Cebu, 54.74 km in Metro Davao and 313.12 km in Metro Manila.
