The Department of Energy (DOE) of the Philippines has announced plans to develop 68 renewable energy (RE) projects, with a combined capacity of 14.24 GW, in Western Visayas. Of the total project planned, 24 will be to develop hydropower facilities, 17 for offshore wind energy, 14 for solar power, 12 projects to develop onshore wind capacity, and one project will develop geothermal energy.
Currently, around 29 RE facilities are generating energy in Western Visayas, with a combined output of 708 MW. Under the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) 2020-2040, at least 35 of the total energy output will be generated from renewable sources by 2030, with the share increasing to 50 per cent by 2040.
