The Governments of Malaysia and Thailand have announced plans to enhance trade ties with a direct Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok cargo rail service, planned to begin in 2025, in a move aimed at improving ASEAN economic integration.
The Government of Malaysia has approved the proposal for a direct cargo rail service between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. The service will improve connectivity not just between Malaysia and Thailand but also with other countries such as Laos, China, and Central Asia. The initiative aligns with Malaysia’s goals as ASEAN Chair to increase intra-regional trade.
In addition to the cargo rail link will revive the direct Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok passenger rail service, which could become a popular and affordable tourism option, especially for Europe-based travellers seeking a scenic 15-16 hour train journey. The service is expected to use existing railway tracks connecting the two capitals, with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) tasked with preparations for its launch within three months.
