Singapore port handled 33.9 million TEUs of container traffic during 2014 while the world’s top container port at Shanghai reportedly handled about 35.2 million TEUs in 2014. During 2013, the gap between the two ports was about 1 million boxes. According to Container Trade Statistics Limited, global containerised traffic touched 124 million TEUs during January-November 2014 as compared to 118.9 million during the corresponding period of 2013, recording an increase of 4.3 per cent.
