Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Metro) has awarded a construction contract worth RM943 million to a joint venture (JV) company to undertake the construction of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Project’s Red Line. The JV company comprises Sri Datai Construction (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, JT JV Builders Sdn Bhd, and CHEC Construction (M) Sdn Bhd.
Works are expected to commence in January 2024 with completion scheduled for December 2026.
The KUTS project is being developed in phases with Phase 1 consisting of the Blue, Red, and Green Line. The Blue Line will span 27.6 km and connect Rembus in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in the city centre. The Green Line will span 30 km and connect Pending to Damai. The Red Line will span 12.3 km and connect Kuching Sentral to Pending.
Phase 1 of the KUTS project will commence partial service at the end of 2025, with the line completely opening up to passengers by the end of 2027. Once completed, Sarawak Metro will operate and maintain the system.
