The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has awarded a consortium comprising Japan-based Furukawa Electric Company Limited and SL Development Construction Corporation (SLDCC) a PHP1.9 billion contract to develop a subsea power transmission system to link substations in Cebu City with those on Lapu-Lapu City on Mactan Island. The project is scheduled for delivery in 2023.
Furukawa Electric will provide 230kV AC XLPE-insulated 1600 mm2 triple-core underwater cables, as well as a cable temperature and load monitoring system, while SLDCC will undertake the construction on the cable system.
The Cebu submarine power transmission project is expected to support reliable power transmission capacity and maintain supply to major load centres in Mandaue City and Mactan, even during an N-1 contingency condition.
