The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has signed an agreement with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to co-locate its facilities inside the NGCP infrastructure for the implementation of the National Broadband Plan (NBP).

As a part of the agreement, DICT will be able to use NGCP’s 6,154 km dark fibre network between Luzon and Mindanao. These are unused fibre-optic cables, which are leased to individuals or companies to establish optical connections among locations.

In 2016, the Government of the Philippines appointed DICT to carry out the NBP in an attempt to improve the country’s quality of internet connectivity. Under Phase 1, DICT will activate the cable landing station in Baler and connect to NGCP Node in San Fernando through the Luzon Bypass Infrastructure.
