Cambodia has revised its Power Development Plan 2020-2030 to include a larger share of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) consumption in the power generation mix. Around 3.6 GW of gas-based power generation is expected to come online between 2027 and 2030. Cambodia does not have much domestic gas production. Therefore, the supply will come primarily from LNG imports. In January 2020, it had conducted trials of LNG imports as part of the first phase of its natural gas plan. However, according to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a recession in Cambodia. As a result, its energy demand is expected to decline by around 10 per cent compared to previous forecasts.
