The Government of Cambodia has inaugurated a 45 km upgraded section of National Road 7, a China-funded transport infrastructure project aimed at improving regional connectivity, trade and logistics.
The upgraded four-lane section extends from Skun Market Roundabout to Kizuna Bridge Roundabout in Kampong Cham Province, forming part of the strategic corridor linking Phnom Penh with northeastern Cambodia and the Laos border.
The project was completed over 27 months by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and financed primarily through a preferential loan from the Chinese government, with additional funding from the Cambodian government.
The road has been expanded from two lanes to four lanes to accommodate rising traffic demand, improve freight movement and strengthen Cambodia’s logistics network. The upgraded corridor is expected to facilitate the transport of agricultural products, support tourism and improve access to economic opportunities across Kampong Cham and neighbouring provinces.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet described the project as a key component of the government’s Pentagonal Strategy – Phase I, highlighting its role in enhancing public transport, trade, tourism and regional economic development. The project is also expected to generate an economic internal rate of return (EIRR) of 15.27 per cent.
The upgraded National Road 7 forms part of the broader Cambodia–China infrastructure partnership and is expected to improve cross-border connectivity while supporting long-term socioeconomic development and regional supply chains.
