Completion of works to upgrade a 900-metre section of the Bukit Timah Canal has been delayed from 2024 till 2026 to align with the development of a Bukit Timah-Rochor Green Corridor in Singapore. Both projects will be completed together to avoid prolonged traffic diversion along Bukit Timah Road.
Public Utilities Board (PUB), the national water agency of Singapore commenced work in 2019 to widen and deepen the canal from Rifle Range Road to Jalan Kampong Chantek in an effort to increase its rainwater capacity by 30 per cent. The increase in the retention capacity will eliminate the risk of overflowing, as the area is prone to floods after heavy rainfall.
PUB has invested USD2 billion in drainage improvement works, and an additional USD1.4 billion has been set aside for further improvement works between 2021 to 2025.
The first phase of the green corridor is expected to be completed by 2027, and the 1 km-long park will run along the canal. It will include an elevated sky park above the canal connecting the Rail Corridor to Jalan Kampong Chantek.
