Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Limited Company (BEM) has partnered with CKPower Public Limited Company (CKP) to develop the first solar-powered mass transit system in Thailand. As a part of the project, solar energy will be used to power the Chalerm Ratchamongkol Line (MRT Blue Line) and the Chalong Ratchadham Line (MRT Purple Line) in Bangkok.
As per the agreement, CKP will design, install, and construct the solar system, as well as oversee post-installation maintenance services. The design works will be completed by January 2024 and the construction is scheduled to commence in February 2024. The first delivery of electricity is scheduled for August 2024, with other phases concluding by February 2025.
Over a period of 25 years, around 452 GWh of renewable energy (RE) will be supplied to the two MRT lines, accounting for 12 per cent of their total power consumption. The project will eliminate 300,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and generate 4,800 MW of solar energy by 2024.
