The Philippines mobile application ARKO has won an award at the World Summit Awards Mobile Content [WSA-Mobile], 2014. The ARKO application, which serves as a vehicle to deliver important information related to floods to people living in disaster-prone areas, was chosen as one of five winners in the e-inclusion and empowerment category. The application has been designed by the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) programme for disaster risk reduction and mitigation, called the Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (Project NOAH). By accessing the extensive databases of Project NOAH and DOST, ARKO can provide users with updates on rainfall and other weather conditions. It has become an important tool for disaster preparedness in the Philippines. Its features include flood mapping, which shows users areas that are prone to flooding, based on data from previous floods, as well as points out the safe zones that evacuees can go to during floods. The application also has a remote monitoring feature, which allows users to check the flooding and rainfall in other areas, along with a weather advisory to connect with Project NOAH and the weather bureau.
