Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has launched the sixth round of its Large-Scale Solar (LSS6) programme, inviting bids for 2,650 MW of solar generation capacity across Peninsular Malaysia. The tender comprises 2,500 MW of utility-scale solar capacity paired with 1,250 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS), along with an additional 150 MW reserved for Bumiputera companies.
The LSS6 programme is divided into three tender packages aimed at accelerating the deployment of utility-scale renewable energy while enhancing grid reliability through integrated battery storage. The inclusion of 1,250 MW of BESS is intended to improve the flexibility and stability of Malaysia’s power system by supporting the integration of variable solar generation.
The tender forms part of Malaysia’s broader renewable energy strategy to expand clean energy capacity and strengthen energy security. Administered by PETRA, the LSS programme has been a key mechanism for procuring large-scale solar projects in the country and supports the government’s long-term energy transition objectives. The dedicated 150 MW allocation for Bumiputera companies is intended to encourage greater participation by local enterprises in the country’s renewable energy sector.
