The Government of Malaysia has installed 6,416 public electric vehicle (EV) chargers nationwide as of May 2026, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), as the government accelerates the expansion of the country’s EV charging infrastructure.
The network comprises 2,143 direct current (DC) fast chargers and 4,273 alternating current (AC) chargers. To speed up deployment, the government has introduced Planning Guidelines for Electric Vehicle Charging Bays, reducing approval timelines for new charging installations to as little as 14 working days.
EV infrastructure development is being coordinated through the National EV Task Force, which is also focused on strengthening Malaysia’s domestic EV value chain through partnerships between local companies, automakers and global technology suppliers. Priority areas include technology transfer and local production of batteries, electric drive motors and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
The update was provided by MITI in a parliamentary written reply outlining the government’s efforts to expand EV adoption, improve charging infrastructure and develop a comprehensive EV ecosystem.
