The Government of Thailand has been accelerating airport infrastructure upgrades and expanding domestic and international air services as part of a broader strategy to position the country as a regional aviation and logistics hub. The initiative focuses on strengthening connectivity between major cities and emerging destinations while supporting tourism growth and long-term economic development.
The programme includes the expansion of air links between major urban centres and secondary destinations such as Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Udon Thani, alongside efforts to attract additional international services from Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Seven regional airports, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Lampang, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Hua Hin, Phrae and Roi Et, have been identified for infrastructure improvements to accommodate future passenger growth. Particular emphasis is being placed on Hua Hin Airport, where safety enhancements are being implemented to support future international operations. The airport currently has the capacity to handle 300 passengers per hour and accommodate two narrow-body aircraft simultaneously.
The aviation development strategy is also linked to the Eastern Economic Corridor programme, including the U-Tapao Airport and Eastern Aviation City project. The THB 218.8 billion development is planned as a major regional transport and logistics hub with the capacity to handle up to 60 million passengers annually. Authorities stated that the expansion of airport infrastructure and air transport networks will support Thailand’s ambitions to strengthen its position as a leading regional centre for tourism, investment and aviation services.
