State-owned utility Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth nearly USD1 billion to a consortium led by PowerChina and Lilama Corporation for the Quang Trach II LNG-to-power project in central Vietnam.

The Quang Trach II power plant will be developed in Quang Tri Province and will be fuelled by imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). The project is designed as a large-scale combined-cycle gas-fired power facility with a planned installed capacity of approximately 1,500 MW, forming part of Vietnam’s transition from coal-fired generation to lower-emission gas-based power.

Quang Trach II is one of Vietnam’s flagship LNG-to-power projects under the national Power Development Plan (PDP VIII). Once completed, the plant is expected to strengthen grid reliability in central Vietnam, support rising electricity demand, and anchor associated LNG import and regasification infrastructure at the Quang Trach energy centre. PowerChina and Lilama will jointly execute civil works, power island construction, and balance-of-plant systems under the EPC scope.
