The Hanoi People’s Committee has approved the alignment and facility sites for Metro Line No.5, a nearly 40km route designed to strengthen western connectivity and ease traffic congestion. The line will run from Van Cao through Ngoc Khanh and Lang to Hoa Lac, with 20 stations and two major depots.

The project will include six underground, three elevated, and 11 at-grade stations, many of which will interconnect with other lines, including 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and monorail M2. The alignment features an underground section from Van Cao to Tran Duy Hung, before transitioning to elevated and at-grade segments along Thang Long Avenue and the Hoa Lac Expressway. Depot No.1, covering 32 hectares in Son Dong and Duong Hoa, will also house a rail vehicle assembly plant, while Depot No.2 in Hoa Lac will serve as the main maintenance hub.

Authorities have assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to verify drawings, while district-level People’s Committees will manage land and site clearance. Metro Line No.5 is expected to become a key transit corridor, supporting Hanoi’s integrated metro network, reducing reliance on private vehicles, and stimulating growth in Hoa Lac’s satellite city and Hi-Tech Park. The plan aligns with the city’s sustainable transport strategy, following record ridership on existing lines, which carried 1.8 million passengers during recent holiday celebrations.
