The Government of Malaysia has launched two flagship clean energy projects in Terengganu—the hybrid hydro floating solar (HHFS) initiative and the country’s first large-scale green hydrogen hub. The projects aim to strengthen Malaysia’s role in the regional hydrogen value chain and advance the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR). The hydrogen hub, a partnership between Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and PETRONAS, will support end-to-end hydrogen production and derivatives such as green ammonia and methanol, while TNB enhances grid infrastructure to integrate renewables.

The HHFS project, developed by TNB Genco and Terengganu Incorporation, forms part of TNB’s 2.5 GW hybrid solar-hydro initiative. Located at the Kenyir hydro station, the floating solar system will provide renewable generation backed by hydropower flexibility to stabilise the grid. Both projects are positioned within the Kenyir-Kertih Corridor, leveraging TNB’s renewable upgrades and PETRONAS’ facilities in Kertih, including planned electrolyzers and CCUS plants. Officials highlighted the initiatives as catalysts for Terengganu’s socio-economic growth and for placing Malaysia on the global map as a green energy hub.
