The Hanoi People’s Committee has announced plans to begin construction of Metro Line 2 (Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao section) in October 2025. The 11.5-km line will include 8.9 km of underground alignment and 2.6 km of elevated viaducts. It will feature ten stations—seven underground and three elevated.
The total investment for the project has been revised to VND35.6 trillion (USD1.4 billion), up from VND19.5 trillion approved in 2008. The line is expected to be completed by 2030.
The Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board (MRB) is currently working with Japanese consultants to finalise the basic design. Land clearance is 90 per cent complete, with the main pending areas being the Xuan Dinh depot site and a section in Tay Ho ward.
The line will be Hanoi’s first urban rail project developed under the transit-oriented development (TOD) model, with plans to convert the depot area into a new residential hub.
