The State Governments of Bali and Jakarta have announced plans to advance collaboration on a USD20 billion subway project aimed at easing traffic congestion on the resort island.

The importance of aligning the MRT with Bali’s unique environment, while considering the external investment and technical support, noting Jakarta’s readiness to assist. An MoU on inter-provincial cooperation is in progress to formalise the partnership.

The subway’s first 16-km phase—from Ngurah Rai International Airport to Cemagi—will include stops at Central Parkir Kuta, Seminyak, and Berawa. Scheduled for completion by 2028, it uses standard-gauge tracks in 30-meter-deep tunnels. The project, led by Indotek, China Railway Construction Corporation, and Sinar Bali Bina Karya, is expected to finish all four phases by 2031, covering additional routes to Jimbaran, Renon, and Sukawati.
