YTL Communications has secured a deal with the Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) to install fibre optic infrastructure along 1,600 kilometres of railway tracks across Malaysia. The initiative forms part of a broader effort to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure and attract more network facility providers.
The project spans routes from Padang Besar to Johor Bahru and Tumpat in Kelantan. Loke clarified that while YTL Communications submitted the most financially beneficial bid during the RFP process, the agreement is non-exclusive, allowing other telecom operators to participate in future expansions. Revenue generated will support the refurbishment of railway assets, KTMB operations, station upgrades, and new rolling stock investments.
This is the second fibre optic project along Malaysia’s railways, following the original deployment nearly three decades ago, underscoring a renewed push to integrate digital connectivity with national infrastructure.
