The Government of HCM City has announced plans to develop an intelligent transportation system (ITS) to mitigate traffic congestion and enhance safety in Vietnam. The city is leveraging technology to manage traffic more efficiently, with initiatives such as automatic weighing stations, image-based penalty systems, and AI-driven traffic regulation. In the first half of 2024, the city’s Transport Department detected over 1,700 traffic violations, resulting in fines of over USD900,000. The introduction of automatic weighing stations reduced vehicle violations by 91 per cent.

The city is also implementing digital transformation and AI to improve traffic management and the operation of its transport systems. With over 1,000 cameras monitoring traffic and more than 200 with automatic control capabilities, HCM City is working towards a smarter, more sustainable transport ecosystem. However, challenges remain, including integrating technology systems and creating a shared database for better coordination among agencies. The city’s metro line, set to begin operations in December 2024, is part of its broader efforts to enhance urban mobility.
