The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has announced plans to commence operations of four geothermal power plants in the Philippines by the end of 2024. The plants will add a total of 82 MW to the country’s renewable energy (RE) capacity. The projects include a 29 MW Palayan Bayan binary power plant in Bicol, a 5.6 MW power plant in Bago City, Negros Occidental, a 20 MW Tanawon geothermal power plant in Bicol and a 28 MW Mahanagdong binary power plant in Leyte.
In addition to these geothermal projects, EDC is also implementing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to enhance their existing facilities. By the end of 2024, 20 MWh BacMan BESS in Bicol, 10 MWh Tongonan BESS in Leyte and 10 MWh Negros BESS will be operational. The projects are being developed at an investment of around PHP29.3 billion.
