Keppel Infrastructure (Keppel), a wholly owned subsidiary of Keppel Corporation, and Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG) have decided to jointly conduct front-end engineering design of a natural gas liquids extraction facility project at the SLNG terminal on Jurong Island. The project is expected to provide greater LNG handling flexibility through Singapore, enhancing the country’s energy security. Natural gas liquids such as ethane and propane, which are heavier hydrocarbons, will be separated from LNG at this facility. Its design will take a sustainable approach by utilising cold energy from the SLNG terminal’s operations into the extraction process, potentially reducing carbon emissions.
The recovered natural gas liquids will be supplied to Singapore’s chemical complexes, especially those on Jurong Island. The extraction plant will also expand the LNG ecosystem’s options, such as the usage of LNG as a maritime fuel and will help Singapore achieve its goal of becoming a regional LNG hub. As stated in the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the project will also contribute to Jurong Island’s transition into a sustainable energy and chemicals park.
