Indonesia’s rail firm PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), in collaboration with the state-owned oil and gas corporation PT Pertamina (Persero), is testing LNG as a fuel for rail transport in place of diesel. This is the first such project in Southeast Asia. If the trials are successful, Pertamina will begin selling commercial quantities of LNG to KAI from April 2018, shipping cargoes across the Java Sea from Bontang LNG in East Kalimantan and set up strategic refuelling points along the rail network. The trials were done to support government efforts to encourage the state-owned enterprise to move to alternative fuels, thereby boosting their green credentials and reducing the dependence on oil-based fuels.
