Vietnam-based 750 MW Nhon Trach 2 combined cycle power plant (CCPP) has received the gold award in the Fast-Track Power Plant of the Year category at the Asian Power Awards 2012. The event is organised annually to recognise top achievers in the power sector in Asia. The Nhon Trach 2 CCPP project was adjudged as highly safe, effective, and economical, with a short construction schedule.

The CCPP plant is the first Vietnamese power plant to receive the award and has set a new quality benchmark for the country’s power industry. The plant has been recognised for being constructed within 28.5 months, 1.5 months earlier than the contracted schedule. Further, it has achieved higher power output and electrical efficiency than that mentioned in the contract.

Using modern technologies, the Nhon Trach 2 CCPP has achieved the highest efficiency of all thermal power plants in Vietnam. Since its commissioning in late 2011, the plant has contributed 5 billion kWh of electricity to the national power grid. In the first nine months of 2012, the plant met its target of 3.2 billion kWh, despite the country’s difficult economic times. Currently, the plant’s net efficiency rate is more than 57 per cent.
