Viettel Group has called for Vietnam to begin planning passive telecommunications infrastructure for future sixth-generation (6G) and seventh-generation (7G) mobile networks. The group made the proposal as the National Assembly considered amendments to laws covering radio frequencies, telecommunications, electronic transactions and technology transfer.
Further, the future networks using higher-frequency spectrum would require a greater number of mobile base stations, making early infrastructure planning important. The group noted that Vietnam currently has a relatively high number of people served by each mobile base station compared with neighbouring countries. The infrastructure is shared as a mechanism that can reduce duplicated investment and optimise network deployment costs.
The 2023 Law on Telecommunications already extends beyond conventional telecommunications services to cover data centres, cloud computing and digital infrastructure. The future planning should account for the growing integration of telecommunications with digital platforms, data and service ecosystems.
The National Assembly discussion also considered regulatory mechanisms for emerging technologies, including 6G, satellite networks, direct-to-device satellite connectivity and private industrial networks. Proposals included spectrum sharing, trials of integrated satellite networks and broader infrastructure sharing between telecommunications operators and transport, electricity, lighting and other public infrastructure.
