Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport (MoT) has submitted the pre-feasibility study for the USD8 billion Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong railway project. The railway, spanning 403 km with a 1,435 mm standard gauge, is a key component of Vietnam’s transport strategy, aiming to modernise the country’s rail infrastructure. The project will facilitate trade within the China-ASEAN region, enhance connectivity to economic zones and ports, and boost freight and passenger capacity. Construction is expected to begin by late 2025, following technical design and contractor selection.
The railway is projected to handle 397 million tonnes of cargo and 334 million passengers annually by 2050, addressing Vietnam’s logistical challenges. It will replace the narrow-gauge system, which limits transport capacity and efficiency. Additionally, the new electric-powered system aligns with Vietnam’s net-zero emissions target by 2050, enhancing environmental sustainability.
