Vietnam now has nearly 185,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in operation, including 183,240 electric cars and 974 electric buses, according to the Ministry of Construction. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City lead adoption, with over 38,400 electric cars each, alongside 317 and 507 electric buses respectively. The development is part of the country’s broader strategy to reduce fossil fuel dependency and carbon emissions in the transport sector.
The transport sector in Vietnam consumes over 95 per cent of its energy from fossil fuels, generating roughly 45.8 million tons of CO2 annually. Policymakers are focusing on expanding the EV ecosystem through green investments, legal frameworks, incentive mechanisms, and monitoring systems to accelerate sustainable growth. The move also supports national carbon-neutral objectives.
The World Bank estimates that Vietnam will require approximately USD368 billion by 2040 to achieve net-zero emissions. This investment will target infrastructure development, technological advancement, capital mobilisation, and human resource capacity building to ensure long-term sustainability and energy transition in the country’s transport sector.
