The Government of Vietnam is accelerating the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in the transport sector as part of its national digital transformation strategy.

The Ministry of Construction of Vietnam issued Decision No. 673/QD-BXD on May 8, 2026, outlining the implementation plan for applying IoT technologies in smart transportation. The initiative follows Prime Ministerial Decision No. 2692/QD-TTg issued in December 2025 approving the national smart transport IoT programme.

Under the 2026–2028 roadmap, Vietnam plans to complete legal frameworks and technical standards for IoT deployment in transport. At least two cities will pilot smart operation centres integrating IoT-based transportation data, while all eastern sections of the North-South Expressway are expected to implement complete electronic toll collection systems integrated into a unified smart transport data-sharing platform.

The government also targets the development or submission of 90 per cent of legal documents, standards and technical regulations related to IoT applications in transportation during the period.

For the 2029–2035 phase, Vietnam aims to expand deployment further, with at least five cities and 10 provinces operating smart transport control centres integrating IoT data. Authorities also plan to standardise 100 per cent of transportation IoT data for interconnection between the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Public Security and local governments. In addition, at least 50 per cent of major transport corridors, including expressways and ring roads, are expected to be equipped with IoT sensor infrastructure for monitoring and maintenance.

The plan includes measures to strengthen IoT infrastructure, develop legal and technical standards, and deploy smart transport applications nationwide. Funding will come from state budgets, public-private partnerships, official development assistance and other financing sources.
