Vietnam and Russia have agreed to put Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant on the fast track. The power project is the first nuclear plant to be undertaken in the country. Russia-based Rosatom, the parent company of ASE, has been entrusted with building the Ninh Thuan 1 plant. The feasibility study for the project was submitted in 2014 to the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN). ASE and the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (Vinatom) have also agreed to develop a technology centre for nuclear research. As part of the agreement, Vinatom has suggested three locations – Dalat, Dong Nai, and Ninh Thuan – for the nuclear power plant and auxiliary facilities. The total cost of these is estimated at $500 million. Vietnam aims to have 13 nuclear power plants running by 2030.
